NEX

New Energy Finance is delighted to have joined forced with US-based clean energy index provider, WilderHill, to publish the WilderHill New Energy Global Innovation Index: the first generally available quoted index of global clean energy companies. The calculation agent is the American Stock Exchange, and you can check its value on Reuters, Bloomberg, Yahoo etc.

The NEX was launched in January 2006, under the ticker symbol NEX, and is calculated by the American Stock Exchange. At its launch it has 86 constituents with an aggregate market capitalisation of USD 270bn.

Updates on the NEX performance are provided on these pages, and a quote can be found here.

In order to be considered for inclusion in the NEF Global Energy Innovation Index, companies had to fulfil the following conditions:

  • Operate in one or more of the major sectors of the renewable energy and low-carbon energy technology industry;
  • Derive a significant proportion of their enterprise value from activities in those sectors;
  • Be quoted on a major stock-market of the world (i.e. not on over-the-counter markets such as the OTCBB, or on AIM or the Toronto Venture Exchange);
  • Provide sufficient information for us to be able to establish the company's activities and market capitalisation with a good degree of accuracy.

With these criteria in mind, we have analysed over 1000 quoted companies with activities in renewable energy and energy technology to identify a core group that most accurately characterises the industry and have good liquidity.

The NEX is a successor index to the New Energy Finance Global Innovation Index, which we calculated internally and published throughout 2005.
